Sunday Snippets ~ Secrets and Lies ~ snip #2

Sunday SnippetsSunday Snippets is a Blog Hop of sorts, a chance to sample a segment of an author’s work. Today I’m sharing a pivotal snippet from my novel, Secrets and Lies, published by Books We Love. I really enjoyed writing this one. Hope you enjoy it!

Alex stepped out of the shower feeling relaxed and refreshed. He'd squashed his opponent playing tennis, which always made him feel great. He slipped into jeans and a sweatshirt and waited for Natalie to return. Hopefully, I'll be slipping out of my clothes shortly thereafter.

He heard the front door open and he walked into the living room, smiling. "I'm glad you're home! I was—" He stopped when he got one look at his wife. "Nat? What happened?"

Her ponytail was askew, and there was a large, red welt across her cheek.

"Natalie! Were you in an accident?"

She appeared dazed. She clutched her coat to her waist and looked around the house in confusion.

"Natalie!" Alex grabbed her and she shrank away from him. Her coat fell open and he could see that her clothing, what was left of it, was in shreds. "Oh my God, Nat! What happened?" He held her by the shoulders, aware in some part of his mind that he was frightening her, but he had to know. "What in the hell happened to you?"

She dissolved into tears. "Christmas shopping—Aggieville—man—knife. Made me drive—Bluemont Hill—" Her sobs grew louder and her words became unintelligible.

Alex had heard enough. His eyes filled with tears as he gripped her shoulders firmly. "Did he hurt you?"

"I—I—tried to scream. He hit me."

"Did he rape you?" Alex shouted at her.

"Y-y-yes!" she whimpered, and fell into his arms.
